Thanks to Joe Biden for making the decision, to step aside for the benefit of our country that can't seem get over one of its final prejudices; old age.
For all you people unsubscribing, if you can't discuss politics, are you really free?
In politics, being deceived is no excuse. --Leszek Kolakowski
It feels good, doesn't it? I love the joy that comes through in Harris. It's contagious. You're so right about needing to stay focused. We can, we must, and I think we will. Thank you for commenting. I appreciate you.
As a Canadian I really shouldn't comment on another country's politics BUT here it goes, what the hell are you thinking USA. Mr. Trump is a danger to the whole world! The parallels drawn between Trump and fascist , both current and historical, are accurate. Please vote as the whole world depends upon it. It really does.
On the contrary, you SHOULD comment! Americans need to more fully realize the impact of this election and how much what happens in the US impacts the rest of the world. Likewise, what happens in Canada, as well as other countries, impacts us as well. We are all so connected these days. So thank you for chiming in. I appreciate you.
As someone watching intently from the UK, I can say that the weight is finally lifting for me. I’m truly scared of what another term of Trump might mean for the whole world, not just America. I loved your blog Nancy & how you summed up the situation.
I often wonder what our friends around the world are thinking these days. I'm never sure how much you all care about political shenanigans going on over here. I'd like to think America and the world could survive another Trump presidency. But without a doubt, a whole lot more damage could be done. And you're right, that is scary. Thank you for sharing your perspective. And thank you for your kind words about this piece. I appreciate you.
Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but I do NOT feel a weight has been lifted. I don't like either party, especially the divisiveness they have both created. Just a couple of months ago, nobody -- even the Democrats -- would even mention Kamala as a viable candidate. What short memories we have! Dems seem to think every conservative is a MAGA-loving, Trump-worshiping insurrectionist (not true), and the Republicans think every democrat is a woke idiot (also not true). Neither party can work together, and I don't feel either candidate will focus on healing the divide. All they do is insult each other. I'm tired of it.
Your frustration with both parties is understandable. I, for one, don't believe every conservative is a MAGA-loving Trump-worshipping insurrectionist. I would never say that. I don't think most Dems would either. I don't think most Republicans think Dems are all "radical extreme leftists" either. Most of us lie somewhere in the middle.
You are so right, generalizations are unhelpful - even dangerous. We all need to choose our words carefully and listen to one another. We are all tired of the bickering and inability of politicians to work together. The American people will decide what comes next. It's in our hands now. And I do feel more hopeful than I did a few weeks ago.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I appreciate you.
You're very welcome. Your post really resonated. It pinpointed the time the heaviness began, something I hadn't thought that much about. Thank you for commenting. I appreciate you.
I do not mix politics & mbc advocacy unless it’s legislative/policy advocacy for bills that support patients with MBC. Having said that, I typically avoid all political posts (& snooze persons during election years prolifically post or promote one party over another). I never share my personal politics on social media. A little disappointed to see this in your blog, but also keeping in mind.. it’s YOUR blog, and your right to write about whatever’s on your mind. I neither agree or disagree with your stance, it’s simply a subject I avoid, especially as a patient advocate.
It's good to hear from you! I respect your decision to not mix politics and your MBC advocacy. I'm sorry you're disappointed to see me enter the political realm with this post. I always try to make it clear that I respect and accept all opinions. Debate that is civil and respectful is always a good thing - even in patient advocacy - regarding politics or anything else. I welcome all opinions and always have. These days, healthcare is political. I think I've become more politically active since my cancer diagnosis and my mother's death from MBC. Believe me, I understand you wanting to avoid the subject. But as for me, I can't and won't. Thank you for expressing your thoughts. I appreciate you.
Thank you Nancy! You perfectly described exactly how I have felt since Election 2016. Actually spooky in your relevance to how I have felt. And I, too, am finally smiling again and having some HOPE. I adore Joe Biden and so wish he could have been the one to inspire this moment in history. I did not happen but Joe, in his infinite wisdom and humanity, recognized that it was not meant to be and he did the MOST PATRIOTIC thing since George Washington, he turned over the reins to Kamala Harris, his pick to lead the country should anything happen to him! Exactly perfect! And now there is hope and possibility! We will defeat the scourge that, sadly, has overcome the Republican Party. America will recover and, again, be loving and accepting of ALL ITS CITIZENS!
I am so glad this resonated, and so glad you, too, are smiling again due to that newly kindled hope so many of us are feeling now. I agree that Joe Biden did the right thing. I'm thrilled about the Harris/Walz ticket, and I do believe we can win. Thank you for reading and taking time to comment, too. I appreciate you.
I agree 100%. I fully backed Joe Biden's reelection. I'm sorry he won't get that well-deserved 2nd term. Admittedly, though, my stress levels were rising rapidly. Kamala Harris changed those stress levels overnight. She is going to be a terrific president, especially if she can get the House and Senate to give her the opportunity to succeed.
Personally, I think President Biden could've spared us all, including himself, a lot of angst if he had just gone with his original plan to run for one term only. I feel badly for him in some respects. But I think he's made an even stronger legacy for himself and united the party so much that I feel we have a chance to win this thing. I have a feeling he's relieved in some ways that he's passed the torch. He'll be fine. My stress levels changed overnight, too, and now with Gov Walz on board, I'm even more excited, especially since I still consider myself a Minnesotan. I think he's a wonderful pick, and I am behind this ticket 100%. You're right, of course, without support in the House and Senate, it'll be hard to get things done. But stopping further damage to our democracy is getting a lot done, in and of itself. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate you.
You may very well be right, though the timing (days after the RNC Convention) certainly stole the attention away from the other guys and seems to have caught them flat-footed. I'm not sure whether that was calculated or serendipitous or both. Regardless, I'm ready to dance the Harris Wal(t)z to November and beyond.
You make an interesting observation. I think the timing just went the way it went, but who knows. I'm just glad Biden finally made the decision he made. Clearly, he wanted to run again, and it was hard for him to give that up. I'll always respect him for putting the country first. I'm ready, too, and all in for this ticket. Thank you for your additional thoughts.
You didn’t do anything wrong…..you have to trust yourself to write well. You made a decision to step out of your lane probably in an effort to not only calm yourself but share it with others. I felt you were speaking your truth about what’s going on politically…..and you felt a great need to do it. Those who unsubscribe will probably miss your previous writings…..and maybe they might just return.
You're right, of course, and I know speaking my truths can never be wrong. Unpopular, yes. But wrong, no. I just think it's sad when someone disappears only because of political disagreement. But then, I've likely done the same thing. And as for the lane thing, I can't and won't stay in any particular lane. Life is too short for that. Even regarding what we choose to write about and even if Substack, too, kinda wants writers to be in a particular category. Thank you for your supportive comment. I appreciate you.
I think that Biden's decision to step down was so brave and heart wrenching and showed how much he truly loves his country. I felt so proud and even teared up a little. Now we have Kamala. To quote Stephen Colbert, "What is this feeling in my fingers? Could it be hope?" People are excited again! And yes, many are nervous. I hope they debate. Kamala will wipe the floor with him! She will chew him up and spit him out!!!
I think many of us teared up over all that. I have teared up when listening to Harris speak, too. Love that Stephen Colbert quote. Hope is on the rise and yes, people are excited again. As well as nervous. I hope the debate happens, too. I tend to agree with you regarding how it would likely go. Thank you for commenting. I appreciate you.
Nancy, this is truly a wonderful post. Like you, Alene, and countless Americans, I felt an extreme heaviness that November of 2016. The world had gone dark, it seemed. Then hope when Biden got elected. Then Jan. 6. I watched it on TV, through tears. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Frankly, Biden has done a great job, but Trump in the news constantly was bringing me down.
I was originally in the Let's-Keep-Joe-In camp because I felt having a new Democrat running for president was risky so close to the election. Then I found out about Joe's leaving the race and endorsing Kamala Harris. And in short order, I felt that this was the right decision. I support Kamala 100 percent and feel she is the one who will keep us in a democracy.
A huge weight has been lifted, and I feel I can breathe again -- but not too deeply. In 2016 I was sure that Hillary Clinton would become our next president. And unfortunately I was wrong. There are still way too many MAGA fanatics who love Trump so I'm still quite uneasy. I don't think I'll be able to sleep on election night. This election feels too close for comfort, which begs the question, why is it close? Harris is superior in every way to the convicted felon.
Thank you for the mention, my friend. I try not to tackle politics in my posts, but I couldn't hold back. There's too much at stake. By the way, I love that photo of you and your kitty.
Thank you for saying such complimentary things about this post. After reading Alene's piece, it just had to be written. It's been a crazy few weeks in Politics World. Pretty sure a lot of us won't be sleeping much on election night. I don't know why it's so close either. Returning to the chaos of Trump just doesn't make sense. I've stopped trying to figure it all out.
I'm glad you decided to speak out in your recent post. We are all in this together, and everyone who's able to should speak out. So, thank YOU. Oh, and glad you liked the photo of me and Ninja. Cat ladies (childless and otherwise) have united for sure!
Thank you for reading and commenting. I appreciate you.

Much respect to you, Nancy. I do respect your opinion, but disagree with it. I appreciate all you do and the information and support you give to those of us with breast cancer. The direction this country has taken since 2020, breaks my heart. It breaks my heart to see the current policies championed. IMO this country won’t survive 4 more years of these policies. Hi Mark,
Yes, we owe a debt of gratitude to President Biden. Good quote. Thank you for sharing it. I appreciate you.
Yes! Feeling like a huge weight of doom has lifted. Now we all need to stay focused and keep our eye on the prize and get Harris elected!
Hi Claudia,
It feels good, doesn't it? I love the joy that comes through in Harris. It's contagious. You're so right about needing to stay focused. We can, we must, and I think we will. Thank you for commenting. I appreciate you.
